Munnar Travel Story: Exploring the Western Ghats of Kerala
A Four-Day Journey Through the Hills, Tea Gardens and Waterfalls of Kerala
The first time I heard about Munnar, I imagined mist-covered mountains, endless tea plantations, cool weather and winding roads disappearing into the Western Ghats.
When I finally got the opportunity to visit, I realized that Munnar was much more than a beautiful hill station.
It was a journey filled with friends, laughter, winding roads, waterfalls, tea, viewpoints and plenty of unexpected little moments.
This was my first trip to Munnar, and I travelled with a lively group of college students from Mumbai. What started as a simple trip quickly became a memorable four-day experience.
Here is how the journey unfolded.

Day One – From Mumbai to Kochi
Our journey began with our arrival at Ernakulam Junction. Travelling with a spirited group of college students from Mumbai made the beginning of the trip energetic from the start.
Instead of heading straight to Munnar, we spent the evening exploring Kochi.
We checked into Hotel Mermaid Kochi, where we took some time to relax after the journey.
Later that evening came one of the most enjoyable experiences of the trip—a DJ boating excursion along Marine Drive.
As the boat moved through the backwaters, the atmosphere completely changed. Music, lights, water and a group of excited travellers made it feel less like ordinary sightseeing and more like a floating celebration.
We stayed out until nightfall before returning to the hotel.
It was a perfect beginning to our Munnar adventure.
Day Two – The Road to Munnar
The next morning, we woke up early and said goodbye to Kochi.
Our destination was Munnar.
The road itself became part of the experience.
On the way, we stopped at the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom in Vallarpadam and later visited Vypin Beach.
After spending some time there, we continued towards Kothamangalam, where we stopped for lunch.
As we moved deeper into Kerala, the scenery began to change. The roads became greener, the hills appeared in the distance, and the journey started to feel like a proper escape from city life.
One of the memorable stops along the way was Vallara Waterfalls.
The sound of falling water and the greenery surrounding the area gave us a refreshing break from the road. We also came across several spice shops nearby, giving us an opportunity to see and shop for some of Kerala's famous spices.
Finally, we reached Munnar.
After checking into Hotel Mermaid Munnar, we had dinner and settled in for the night.
The real Munnar experience was about to begin.
Day Three – Tea, Flowers, Mountains and Echoes
Day three was the day I had been waiting for.
We set out to explore some of Munnar's most interesting attractions.
Our first major stop was the Kannan Devan Tea Museum at Nullatanni.
Kannan Devan Tea Museum
If you are interested in understanding why tea is such an important part of Munnar, this is a fascinating place to visit.
We learned about the history of tea cultivation in the region and saw how tea leaves are processed.
Being there with the students and faculty made the visit even more enjoyable. There was plenty of curiosity, conversation and, of course, plenty of interest in tea!
After the museum, we continued towards Karadippara Viewpoint.
Karadippara Viewpoint
The viewpoint gave us an opportunity to stop, breathe and take in the mountain scenery.
Munnar has a way of making you slow down.
You can spend hours looking at the hills, valleys and plantations without feeling the need to do anything else.
Sometimes, the view itself is the activity.
Rose Garden
Our next stop was the Rose Garden.
After spending time among the mountains, the colourful flowers added a completely different character to the journey.
It was a relaxed stop, and naturally, it became another opportunity for photographs with the group.
Echo Point
Then came Echo Point.
This was one of the places I was particularly excited to visit.
The surrounding hills and peaceful landscape create the perfect setting for the famous echo. Naturally, everyone wanted to test it for themselves.
It was one of those simple travel moments that becomes a lasting memory.
There was no complicated activity involved.
Just a beautiful place, a group of friends and plenty of laughter.
Mattupetty Lake
By lunchtime, we reached the area around Mattupetty Lake.
We stopped for lunch while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
After a busy morning of sightseeing, sitting down beside the lake and enjoying the scenery was exactly what we needed.
The combination of mountains, water and greenery is what makes Munnar so special.

Day Four – Saying Goodbye to Munnar
Unfortunately, every good journey eventually comes to an end.
On the fourth day, it was time to leave Munnar and return towards Ernakulam Railway Station.
As we travelled back, there was a strange mixture of happiness and sadness.
We were happy because of everything we had experienced, but there was also that familiar feeling you get when a memorable trip is coming to an end.
We had started the journey as a group of travellers.
By the end, we had created memories together.
We reached the railway station with plenty of time before our departure. Eventually, it was time to say goodbye to the students and the new friends we had made along the way.
Everyone left with photographs, stories and, hopefully, a little more love for travel.

What Made This Munnar Trip Special?
Looking back, it wasn't just the famous attractions that made the trip memorable.
It was the entire experience.
The road from Kochi to Munnar.
The waterfalls.
The spice shops.
The tea museum.
The flowers at the Rose Garden.
The echo at Echo Point.
The peaceful view of Mattupetty Lake.
The laughter inside the bus.
The conversations with the students and faculty.
And those quiet moments when you simply stop and look at the mountains.
That's what travel is really about.
You don't always remember every road you travelled or every meal you ate.
But you remember how a place made you feel.

A Few Words for Fellow Travellers
Munnar is one of those destinations where you shouldn't rush.
Yes, you can create a checklist of attractions and try to cover as many places as possible.
But leave some space in your schedule.
Stop at a viewpoint.
Drink some tea.
Look at the plantations.
Take photographs.
Talk to the people travelling with you.
And occasionally, put the camera away and simply enjoy the view.
Because sometimes the best part of Munnar isn't the destination on your itinerary.
It's the journey between them.
My Munnar Memory
My first trip to Munnar gave me much more than photographs.
It gave me a collection of memories that I still enjoy looking back on.
From the energy of Kochi to the peaceful hills of Munnar, the journey was a beautiful combination of adventure, nature, friendship and discovery.
The Western Ghats have a special kind of beauty.
They don't shout for your attention.
They simply stand there—green, quiet and majestic—and wait for you to notice them.
And once you do, it becomes difficult to forget.
Munnar, I'll definitely see you again.
